When does Pokémon Center charge for preorders?
By Britton Jewell · Last updated
Short answer: when it ships. Pokémon Center authorizes your card when you preorder, authorizes it again 3 to 5 business days before shipping, and charges it when the order ships. Preorders need a credit or debit card: no PayPal, Apple Pay or gift cards. If that second authorization fails, the preorder is canceled and can't be reinstated, so keep the card on the order current.

What happens to your card, step by step
| When | What you'll see |
|---|---|
| The day you preorder | An authorization to check the card. It usually drops off after 5 to 7 business days. |
| While you wait | Nothing, once that hold is gone. |
| 3 to 5 business days before shipping | A new authorization, to check the card is still valid. |
| It ships | The charge, and a shipping email with tracking. |
Source: Pokémon Center's Preorder FAQ says "we will not charge your card for your order until it has shipped. However, a reauthorization will appear 3-5 business days prior to shipping." Its authorization holds page adds that a hold can last up to 30 days depending on your bank, and that Pokémon Center can't remove holds. So for a few days around shipping you can see both the hold and the charge. That isn't a double charge.
If your card fails
When preorders start processing, the store makes several attempts to charge your original card. If it can't, it emails you instructions to change the payment method. If that isn't done before preorders begin shipping, the order is canceled. The Preorder FAQ also says a preorder "may be canceled if the credit card on file is not valid at the time of shipment," and that a canceled preorder "cannot be reinstated."
If your card was replaced or is close to its limit, fix it before the release window. The estimated preorder release dates page lists current ship windows, such as "Early November 2026," so you know when the re-authorization is coming.
Payment rules for preorders
- Preorders take valid credit or debit cards only. "Gift cards, Apple Pay and PayPal cannot be used for preorders," even though the store accepts PayPal and Apple Pay for in-stock orders (payment methods page).
- One release date per order. You can combine preorders that share a release date, but different dates, or a preorder plus an in-stock item, need separate orders. The virtual queue page warns that mixing preorder and non-preorder items in one cart can cause checkout errors.
- Some promotions and gifts with purchase don't apply to preorders.
Pokémon Center doesn't publish a preorder price guarantee, as far as we can find. Compare Walmart and Amazon, which lower the price on badged listings (see when Walmart charges for preorders).
Cancelling a Pokémon Center preorder
On the Order Details page, select Cancel Preorder and confirm. Guest orders use the Order Status page with your order ID and postal code. You can cancel "only before it is processed"; once the card has been re-authorized, it's too late. Allow up to 24 hours for the status to update. You won't be charged, though the hold can sit on your card until your bank releases it (Preorder FAQ).
Two things to know before you cancel:
- Pokémon Center can't change a preorder's shipping address. The only fix is to cancel and order again, and it says it can't guarantee the item will still be available.
- Regular orders can't be canceled at all once placed; only preorders can, before processing (cancel or modify page). After delivery, most items can be returned within 30 days, except final-sale items.
Shipping and release dates
Pokémon Center says it doesn't have exact dates for preorder shipment or delivery. It ships "as close to the release date as possible," and its release-dates page gives windows like "Early November 2026" or "June 2027" that can change. The virtual queue and Invite Only
On busy drops, Pokémon Center puts shoppers in a virtual queue. Keep the queue tab open, don't refresh, and don't open extra tabs or use a VPN. Waiting in line "does not guarantee product availability," and support won't help with queue issues (virtual queue page). Purchase limits show on each product page.
Pokémon Center also runs Invite Only, formerly Early Access: selected newsletter subscribers get a personal link to buy popular items, including preorders, before a wider release. It doesn't publish who qualifies, and extra email addresses don't help and can void an invitation (Invite Only FAQ). Quick answers
When does Pokémon Center charge for a preorder?
When it ships. Pokémon Center places an authorization when you order, which usually drops off in 5 to 7 business days, and a new authorization 3 to 5 business days before shipping. The actual charge posts when the order ships.
Can I use PayPal or a gift card for a Pokémon Center preorder?
No. Pokémon Center says gift cards, Apple Pay and PayPal can't be used for preorders. You need a valid credit or debit card.
Can I cancel a Pokémon Center preorder?
Yes, until it's processed. Select Cancel Preorder on the Order Details page, or use the Order Status page for a guest order. Once the preorder has been processed and your card re-authorized, it can't be canceled.
Why was my Pokémon Center preorder canceled?
Usually because of a problem with the billing or shipping information. If Pokémon Center can't authorize your card when preorders are processed for shipping, the order is canceled and can't be reinstated.
Can I put several preorders in one Pokémon Center order?
Only if they share a release date. Preorders with different release dates, or a preorder with an in-stock item, need separate orders.
