Does a damaged box lower an action figure's value?

By Britton Jewell · Last updated . eBay sales checked .

Short answer: usually, but by less than many people expect. In our two examples from recent eBay sales, damaged-box copies of modern figures mostly sold a few dollars below clean sealed copies once shipping is included, and opened copies sold below most clean sealed ones. In our experience, the more damage, the lower the price: a crushed box, torn window, bent card or missing accessories all cost more than a dent. The only reliable answer for your figure is its own recent sold listings.

What counts as box damage?

Sellers use "damaged box" for everything from a small dent to a crushed package. Roughly from least to most serious:

Who cares depends on the buyer. Collectors who display figures in the box care most. Buyers who open their figures care least, and a damaged-box copy can be a cheaper way to get the same figure.

What box damage did to two figures' prices

We compared recent eBay sold prices for clean sealed, damaged-box and opened copies of two modern figures, one common and one more sought after. Prices include shipping.

FigureClean sealedDamaged boxOpened
Star Wars Black Series, The Bad Batch Echo$11.99–$25.47 (25 sales, middle $19.89)$16.67–$23.02 (11 sales, middle $17.49)$13.99–$24.95 (10 sales, middle $17.35)
Marvel Legends Venompool Deluxe (Target exclusive)$55.00–$110.05 (50 sales, most $62–$85)$45.98–$77.99 (16 sales, most $73–$78)$57.09–$77.77 (7 sales)

How we counted: U.S. eBay sold listings from the roughly 90 days of sales eBay showed on October 11, 2026, matched to the exact release. Prices are the sale price plus the shipping the buyer paid. We left out Best Offer sales (eBay hides the accepted price), lots, bundles, cases, graded copies, customs and accessory-only listings. We sorted listings by what the title said about the box. Two figures is a small sample, not a rule for every line. The searches we used: Echo sold listings and Venompool sold listings (eBay shows about 90 days, so results change). Example damaged-box Echo sales: 307179841740, 307163997423, 307161583041.

Two things stood out:

Leaving out shipping can make the comparison misleading. Before we added it, damaged Echo copies looked more expensive than clean ones, because many clean copies sold with a separate shipping charge.

If you're buying a figure with a damaged box

  1. Look at every photo. Check the window, corners and any tape. If the listing only says "see pics," the pictures are the description.
  2. Compare totals, not prices. Add shipping before comparing a damaged copy with a clean one.
  3. Decide whether the box matters to you. If you'll open it, a few dollars off may be a good deal. If you display in the box, a clean copy may be worth the difference.

If a figure you bought new arrives with a damaged box, that's a different problem. See what to do when your toy arrives with a damaged box.

If you're selling one

In our experience, being upfront is what sells a damaged-box figure. On eBay:

Quick answers

Does a damaged box lower an action figure's value?

Usually, but by less than many people expect. In our two examples from recent eBay sales, damaged-box copies of modern figures mostly sold a few dollars below clean sealed copies, shipping included. In our experience, the more damage, the lower the price, and heavy damage, a bent card or missing accessories cost more. Check sold listings for your exact figure.

Is an opened action figure worth less than a sealed one?

Usually. In our two examples, opened copies sold below most clean sealed copies. Missing accessories lower the price further, so compare an opened figure with others in the same condition.

How should I price a figure with a damaged box?

Check recent sold listings for the exact figure, including shipping. Photograph the damage, describe it in the title and listing, and price a little below clean sealed copies.

Does box damage matter if I'm going to open the figure?

Not much, unless you might sell it later. A damaged-box copy can be a cheaper way to get the figure if you plan to open it anyway.

Why do so many damaged-box figures come from the same sellers?

Some high-volume sellers list their damaged-box copies separately, often a few dollars under their own clean listings. In our Venompool example, one seller accounted for most of the damaged-box sales.
