Is Hot Wheels Red Line Club worth it?
By Britton Jewell · Last updated
Our take: yes, if you want RLC cars. No, as an investment. Mattel only sells RLC cars to members, and $9.99 a year is about what you'd pay over member price for one typical car secondhand. What the $9.99 gets you is a chance at each car, though. And most of the 2026 cars we checked sold on eBay for about what members paid once shipping is added.

What you get for $9.99
- The right to buy RLC exclusive cars. You can't buy them from Mattel without a membership.
- Votes on sELECTIONs cars: members pick the casting, color and wheels, and only members can buy them.
- A Priority Window, "usually 48 hours," on most other cars Mattel sells to Hot Wheels collectors. It ends early if the car sells out.
- Members-only forums, articles and designer content on Mattel Creations.
The membership lasts one year from the day you buy it. You must be 18 or older, and it's limited to one per email address and five per household. The yearly membership car is extra: the 2026 car, a 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C, is $28. Red Line Club is separate from Mattel's free points program (see is Mattel Rewards worth it?).
You get a chance at each car, not the car
Mattel's FAQ is direct about it: membership "only guarantees the opportunity to purchase," and some members won't get a car if more people order than Mattel made. Most RLC cars are limited, and some come with a randomized chase version.
sELECTIONs cars work differently. They're made to order, so if you order during the window, you get one.
What 2026 RLC cars cost and resell for
Mattel Creations has listed 31 RLC exclusive cars since February 13, 2026, priced $25 to $50. Most are $28. U.S. shipping from Mattel is $8 standard, so a $28 car is about $36 delivered before tax. Here's what seven of them sold for on eBay:
| Car | Mattel price | eBay median | Sales |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ferrari F40 | $50 | $159 | 150 |
| 1994 NSX | $38 | $52 | 88 |
| 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C (membership car) | $28 | $40 | 88 |
| 1962 Ford F-100 | $28 | $39 | 80 |
| 1993 Mazda RX-7 R1 | $28 | $36 | 19 |
| 1976 Volkswagen Golf Mk1 GTI | $28 | $36 | 76 |
| '71 Datsun 510 | $28 | $20.50 | 30 |
eBay sold listings checked October 21, 2026: sealed cars with "2026" in the title, sold in 2026, without lots, chase versions, customs or convention versions. Item price only, before shipping and before eBay's fees.
The F40 is the exception. The rest sold for $36 to $52, close to what a member pays to get one delivered, and the Datsun 510 went for less than Mattel charged. As a fan, that means you can often buy a car you missed for a few dollars over member cost. As a reseller, most of these don't leave much after fees. Is Overdrive worth it?
Overdrive is a $99 add-on to the membership. It automatically buys every RLC exclusive car released during the year, and Mattel says a new one drops every 1 to 3 weeks. Here's how it works:
- You still pay each car's price plus shipping and tax. The $99 doesn't buy any cars.
- You get an email before each drop and 5 to 10 days to skip it in your account. If you don't skip, you're charged and the car ships.
- Overdrive members get each drop before other members. New for 2026, you can order up to the purchase limit instead of one.
- It's U.S. only, ends December 31, and the $99 isn't refundable. You can cancel any time. Mattel capped 2026 at 15,000 upgrades.
Taking all 31 cars this year comes to $970. Add $8 shipping each if they shipped on their own, the $99 and the $9.99 membership, and it's about $1,327 before tax. Worth it if you want most of the cars, or the ones that resell high like the F40. If you only want a few, skip Overdrive and buy them during the drop, or pay a few dollars more on eBay.
Renewing, cancelling and refunds
- Digital memberships have "no refunds, no exchanges," per Mattel's listing.
- You can cancel any time through Mattel's Customer Service, but your benefits end as soon as Mattel gets the request.
- Mattel usually announces the next year's membership car "late in the current year or very early in the following year."

Who it's for
- Worth it: you want even one or two RLC cars a year, or want to vote on sELECTIONs.
- Probably not: you only want one specific car that's already out. Buying it secondhand may cost less than the membership plus the time spent chasing a drop.
- Overdrive: only if you'd take most of the year's cars anyway.

Quick answers
Is Hot Wheels Red Line Club worth it?
Yes, if you want RLC cars. No, as an investment. You can't buy them from Mattel without it, and $9.99 is about what you'd pay over member price for one typical car secondhand. How much is Red Line Club?

What is RLC Overdrive?
A $99 add-on that automatically buys every RLC exclusive car released during the year, one every 1 to 3 weeks. No. Mattel's listing says digital memberships have no refunds or exchanges. You can cancel any time through Customer Service, but your benefits end right away.
