When does Mattel Creations charge for preorders?
By Britton Jewell · Last updated
Short answer: when you order. For made-to-order items, Mattel says so in the terms on each listing: your card is charged the day you place the order, even if the item ships a year later. For other preorders Mattel doesn't publish a rule, but buyers report the same thing. Crowdfunds are the one exception: you're charged only if the campaign reaches its goal. And once you order, you usually can't cancel, so budget for the full price on the day you click buy.

When you're charged, by type of order
| Order type | When you're charged | How sure |
|---|---|---|
| Made-to-order | The day you order | Mattel's own terms, on the listing |
| Regular preorder | When you order, buyers report | Mattel doesn't say |
| Crowdfund | Only if the campaign hits its goal | Mattel's campaign FAQs |
Made-to-order: charged the day you order
Made-to-order items are sold for a set window, then produced. Each listing carries the same terms block. On the 2026 Masters of the Universe Chronicles Orko, for example, it says: "A charge will be placed on your payment account and will be processed on the date you place your order." The same terms say:
- You can cancel during the sale window by calling Customer Service. After the window ends, "all orders are final."
- The expected ship date is on the product page and "may be up to a year from your order date."
- If the date moves more than 30 days past the original, Mattel tells you and you can request a refund.
When we scanned Mattel Creations' catalog, that charge sentence appeared on 28 listings, all of them made-to-order. Mattel's FAQ adds that made-to-order toys are final sale, and that paying for faster shipping "does NOT reduce production time."
Regular preorders: Mattel doesn't say
Regular preorders, like the DC Premium Batman: Hush diorama that ships by April 2027, carry no charge terms. Mattel's FAQ and shipping page don't cover it either. On Mattel's own community forum, buyers report being charged when they order: one 2023 thread asks why preorders are being billed four months in advance, and in another buyers say the money comes off their card within a day or so. A forum moderator in the first thread said cards are only authorized until the item ships, but the buyer replied that the charge had posted. Mattel's terms of sale say it "may request a pre-authorization" on some orders that "will not be billed," without saying which.
Our read: plan as if you'll be charged when you order. If your card shows only a pending amount, that's the authorization, and the charge should follow.
Crowdfunds: charged only if funded
Mattel runs crowdfund campaigns for big items like playsets. On the Masters of the Universe Origins Snake Lair campaign, Mattel said you "won't be charged unless the campaign reaches the minimum goal," the amount shows as "pending" until then, and a failed campaign is cancelled with the pending charge removed. If you pay with Shop Pay installments, the first installment is charged up front. You can cancel by phone during the campaign; after it ends there are no refunds. Hasbro's HasLab works the same way (see when Hasbro Pulse charges for preorders).
Cancelling a Mattel Creations order
Mattel's FAQ is short on this: "Once an order is submitted, it cannot be changed or canceled." The only windows are the ones above, for made-to-order items and crowdfunds, and both mean calling Customer Service before the window closes. If Mattel cancels an order, the FAQ says the card hold clears in 7 to 10 business days. If an item sells out after you order, you're refunded for it.
That's stricter than most stores. Hasbro Pulse lets you cancel a regular preorder in your account until it ships, and so do Amazon and Target. Compare the full list in when do preorders get charged?
Drops and sellouts
- Your cart doesn't hold anything. Mattel's FAQ says an item is only yours once you get an order number.
- Listings show purchase limits. Mattel's terms of sale say anyone who places more than 3 orders within 24 hours of a release has those orders sent to a fraud queue for review, and that Mattel may refuse sales to resellers.
- Made-to-order windows have no purchase limits, so you can order any time until the window closes, though Mattel can shorten it. Everything else can sell out.
Shipping, payment and returns
U.S. shipping is $8 standard (about 10 to 14 business days), $26 two-day or $31 next-day, per Mattel's shipping page. If you order an in-stock item with a preorder, the in-stock item ships now and the preorder ships by its date. Mattel says back-ordered items that ship separately don't cost extra shipping. International prices include duties except in Canada, and Mattel doesn't ship to Quebec.
Mattel takes Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, Shop Pay, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Venmo and Klarna, and Shop Pay can split a purchase into installments. It doesn't sell gift cards.
Returns go through Mattel's contact form and take at least 2 to 3 weeks to process. Made-to-order items are final sale unless they arrive damaged, and international orders can't be returned. For a damaged box, see what to do when your toy arrives damaged.
Mattel Rewards points
Mattel Creations added a free points program in October 2026. It pays 2% to 5% back in credit, but many drops and pre-sales don't earn points. Tiers, catches and whether it's worth joining are in is Mattel Rewards worth it?
Is Mattel Creations legit?
Yes. It's Mattel's own collector store at creations.mattel.com. Mattel's FAQ describes its Creations Exclusive Designs as items "made by Mattel Creations" that carry Mattel Creations branding on the box, sold there and sometimes at conventions or select retailers. Quick answers

For made-to-order items, yes: Mattel's listing terms say the charge is processed on the date you place your order. For other preorders Mattel doesn't publish a rule, but buyers on Mattel's own forum report being charged when they order. Crowdfund preorders are the exception: they stay pending and are charged only if the campaign reaches its goal.
Can you cancel a Mattel Creations preorder?
Usually not. Mattel's FAQ says an order can't be changed or cancelled once it's submitted. Made-to-order and crowdfund orders can be cancelled by calling Customer Service while the sale window or campaign is still open. After that, they're final.
How long do Mattel Creations made-to-order items take to ship?
Up to a year. The expected ship date is on the product page. If it moves more than 30 days past the original date, Mattel says it will tell you and let you request a refund.
Do Mattel Creations preorders earn Mattel Rewards points?
Often not. Mattel's Rewards terms say limited-edition, launch and pre-sale products, including timed drops and allocation-based releases, don't earn points unless the product page says they do. Regular in-stock purchases earn 1 to 2.5 points per dollar depending on your tier, and 50 points are worth $1.
Is Mattel Creations legit?
Yes. Mattel Creations is Mattel's own online store for collectors, at creations.mattel.com. It sells Mattel's Creations Exclusive Designs along with collector lines like Hot Wheels Red Line Club, Masters of the Universe and WWE.
